One of Britain’s greatest institutions Sir Richard Attenborough died on Sunday August 24, 2014 at the age of 90.

Attenborough was not only a great actor but he also found fame as an award winning director picking up two Academy Awards for Gandhi (1982).

Your Local Guardian:

As an actor  he first made a big impact as the small-time hoodlum ‘Pinkie’ in Brighton Rock (1947). Funnily enough I was watching The Great Escape (1963) this afternoon a major classic movie if ever there was one. He also featured in Doctor Doolittle (1967), 10 Rillington Place (1971) as real life serial killer John Christie. A Bridge too Far (1977) which he also directed, Jurassic Park (1993), Miracle on 34th Street (1994) and many more.

Your Local Guardian:

As a director he gave us Oh! What A Lovely War (1969), Young Winston (1972), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Magic (1978), Gandhi (1982) AA, A Chorus Line (1985), Cry Freedom (1987) starring Denzel Washington, Chaplin (1992) starring Robert Downey Jr. as Chaplin and Shadowlands (1993) with Anthony Hopkins.

Your Local Guardian:

In 1967, he was honoured with a CBE). Then he was knighted in 1976. Local readers may recall that in 1993 he was made a life peer as Baron Attenborough, of Richmond upon Thames.  From 1949 until October 2012, Attenborough and his wife Sheila lived in Beaver Lodge on Richmond Green in London. The house was later sold in October 2012 for £11.5 million, owing to the couple's deteriorating health.

He was a great supporter of the British Film Industry and Newsquest regularly supported the The Sir Richard Attenborough Awards.

RIP Dickie
