A new canvas by architect Will Alsop will be the highlight of an exhibition examining the everyday uses of drawing opening at the Museum of Croydon this week.
Alsop has been working in collaboration with community groups to produce the drawing inspired by the idea of building a cathedral in Croydon to give it city status, and it will be displayed alongside the drawings he did on the future of Croydon as it might look in 2020.
The Quick on the Draw exhibition will look at the diverse uses of drawing, from fabulous multimedia displays to designing a guitar, recreating the appearance of extinct animals or developing a computer game, and is split into three sections.
The first section, The Great Wall of Drawings, is a visual bombardment of drawings used in a wide range of different activities, trades and professions, while the second, Drawings Workshop, is a series of case studies looking in detail at the uses of drawing, including palaeontology, wallpaper design and town planning.
The final section, Everyone Can Draw, will give visitors the opportunity to put pen to paper and focus on aesthetic qualities, shape and form, volume and space, colour and texture and to have some fun.
In August there will be also series of free workshops for children including, Cartoon Creations, Wallpaper Designs and Paper Doll Fashion.
Quick on the Draw, Museum of Croydon, Katharine Street, June 6 to September 19, Mon to Sat 10.30am-5pm, free. Call 020 8253 1022 or visit museumofcroydon.com.
