King of the Sinhas
Fit for a king: Paul Sinha's tour was such a success, it toured the world
Fit for a king: Paul Sinha's tour was such a success, it toured the world

Doctor, Doctor' jokes have probably been a staple of comedy since it was invented but there are few stand-ups for whom they would hold any relevance.

Paul Sinha, however, is both a qualified GP and burgeoning talent on the comedy scene, having wowed the Edinburgh Festival with his show King of the World, which he brings to Kingston this week.

The London-based funnyman still retains his role as a part-time practitioner and reveals why he adopted such a drastic career change.

Sinha explains: "I was always a fan of comedy and grew up watching the likes of Harry Enfield and Ben Elton.

"I remember thinking how great it would be doing stand-up and making people laugh.

"I started going to new-act competitions and got thinking that a lot of the people in them weren't very good.

"I just thought, What's the worse that can happen?' - and now here I am!"

Sinha was an if.comedie nominee in 2006 for only his second solo show, Saint or Sinha, which went global. And he hopes his new show will prove equally popular.

He adds: "It is a more relaxed storytelling type of show. It is not, Here's a few gags, bang bang, show's over'.

"It's all about exploring those moments when we feel on top of the world."

And what if Sinha really was king of the world - what would he intro- duce?

He concludes: "I'd make it compulsory for everybody to travel the globe.

"So many problems come from a lack of understanding - the world would be a much better place if we could just learn to laugh with each other."

Paul Sinha, Tony Law, Grey Horse, 46 Richmond Road, Kingston, March 16, 8pm. Call 020 8541 4328.
