McIntyre heads to Epsom Playhouse

Readers of our sister newspaper, the Surrey Comet, may have noticed Michael McIntyre get a regular mention in our weekly interview with a comedian. Particularly when said comedian is asked "which comics are you most enjoying at the moment?" or "who should have won the if.comedy award last year?"

It seems comedians can't get enough of McIntyre at the moment and your opportunity has come as he comes to Epsom Playhouse for a one-off show next week.

One of the many comedians to live in north London's suburban paradise, Muswell Hill, this one lives the middle-class life more unashamedly and with better gags than the others.

In fact, the new-found dominance of middle-class comedians is somewhat unpopular, akin to the arrival of the Vikings or the grey squirrel. They have no regard for what they trample underfoot and shall prevail.

But McIntyre is a big, grinning exception to the rule. His material and delivery are just too good to resist, as is his ability to riff on the spot with some unscheduled banter. And, while he is likely to talk about things like Waitrose and his kids' vomit, he is also the smiling assassin.

At his Edinburgh Festival show last year, I watched him (brilliantly) take the mickey out of Scotland for much of the show, not to mention swipe a punter's bag (complete with detailed bank statements) and rifle through it onstage. Easy targets? Yep and feel free to feel guilty at how hilarious you find his cruel streak. After all, his Edinburgh show sold out every night of its two-week run at Soho Theatre.

Let's have a look at his credentials. On the gogglebox, you can see him regularly on Mock the Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You, plus he has his own Paramount Comedy special - Live From The Comedy Store.

He was a nominee in the 2003 Perrier Best Newcomer Awards and, last year, chortle.co.uk - the comedy fans' online bible, made him Headliner of the Year.

Confident without being arrogant, cheeky but not light-weight, cutting but not brazenly offensive. If you haven't discovered Michael McIntyre yet, then it is time to get involved.

Michael McIntyre; Epsom Playhouse, Ashley Avenue, Epsom. Tuesday, February 5, 8pm, £14.50/£11.60, call 01372 742555/742227 or visit epsomplayhouse.co.uk for booking details (returns only).
