Coming to Wandsworth: Shappi Khorshandi
Coming to Wandsworth: Shappi Khorshandi

Anyone familiar with the comedy programmes on BBC Radio 4 will know Shappi Khorshandi's witticisms. The Barnes-based comedian is a regular on programmes such as Loose Ends, The News Quiz and QuoteUnquote which combined with her top stand-up act to earn her a nomination for best breakthrough act at the 2007 Chortle Awards. The Anglo-Iranian is also married to stand-up comic Christian Reilly.

PF: What is your favourite London venue?

SK: Banana Cabaret. The people who go there are comedy literate', so I can't get away with murder. It is great when it is full as you have lots of people in the gallery laughing and it crashes down on your head. It is lovely - as long as they are not gobbing on you.

PF: Which comedians do you like?

SK: Michael McIntyre, he will be the next huge thing. On and off stage he makes me howl.

PF: How would you desc-ribe your style of comedy?

SK: I like good old-fashioned set up and punchline but I disguise that with my busyness and chatiness. I'm not an aggressive comic unless I get serious s***!

PF: Which dead comedian would you bring back?

SK: Charlie Chaplin. He was a master at defining a genre and understanding comedy can touch your heart as well as tickle your funnybones. He is far more than slapstick, it's about the human condition and the underdog getting one over authority.

PF: Which celebrity do you look like?

SK: That one off Star Trek, Ohura (Deanna Troy), I have been called her a lot, especially when my hair was longer. I used to get Shilpa Shetty a lot but that's probably because I'm beige and not because I look like her! My Dad thinks I look like Victoria Wood. I can see that, even though she is older and a different nationality, it is the nose and the shape of my lips and eyes.

PF: Whose sex face would you least like to see?

SK: Victoria Beckham's, as it would be really staged and forced, she'd be pouting and I couldn't handle that.

Jimmy Carr's I would quite like to see. I think it would be the same as his normal face.

PF: How is it being married to another comedian?

SK: There is a lot of competition. When he comes out with a joke, I beg him to let me have it! No, it's good really, we work together quite a lot and are touring together soon.
