Comedian Rik Mayall suffered "an acute cardiac event" after returning from a morning run, his wife said today.

West London Coroner's Court said a post-mortem examination into the death of the comedian has proven inconclusive.

More tests will have to be carried out to determine the cause of death, the court added.

Mayall was pronounced dead at his home in Barnes, Richmond upon Thames, shortly after police were called at 1.19pm on Monday, June 9.

His hit comedies included the Young Ones, Bottom, Blackadder and the New Statesman.

The actor was married to makeup artist Barbara Robbin with three children.
