It can't be easy juggling a busy job, two wives and two homes - but it sure does make good comedy.

Croydon Operatic and Dramatic Association's latest offering is Run For Your Wife, a comedy play in the form of Fawlty Towers that was a West End hit back in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

It follows the story of a London cabbie as his complicated life begins to unravel around him.

"This guy John Smith is a cab driver with two wives on the go in Streatham and Clapham," said the amateur groups Nick Miller.

"Without giving too much away his secrets start to unravel when he has to go into hospital and the police start to track down his two addresses.

"If you say Fawlty Towers people get the gist of the type of comedy involved.

"We've set it in the early 1980s, one of the reasons being that with mobile phones these days you really wouldn't get away with this idyllic lifestyle.

"We're also trying to cash in a bit on the revival of the early 80s what with things like Ashes to Ashes and Spandau Ballet."

The comedy is directed by Ken Nicholson, who has been with the group for the last 38 of their 66 year history.

Every year they do one big musical and a play, and count former Eastender Nigel Harman among their former members.

Miller, one of the committee who chose Run For Your Wife as this year's production, added: "We chose it because we are trying to vary our productions.

"We do one big musical every year, it's Oklahoma in October, and then a play in the Spring.

"We thought we would do something quite accessible for all ages and Run For Your Wife fits into that category.

"That's also why we are having matinees on Wednesday and Saturday, the Wednesday one is for the senior citizens while the Saturday one is for the children."

Run For Your Wife, Fairfield Halls, May 20 to 23, 7.45pm, Wed and Sat matinee 2.30pm, £5 to £10. Call 020 8688 9291 or visit fairfield.co.uk.
