The plans to charge residents £35 per bag of garden waste collected have not been thought through very carefully.
Most people who are committed gardeners have a compost heap already and some of us are still using the green cones which were supplied after the first composting initiative.
In spite of this, it was invaluable to have twigs and shrubby cuttings collected, because they take ages to break down unless you have costly and energy using equipment to grind them up before composting them.

If the council persists in its plans to charge for garden waste collection, three things will happen.
People will drive to the dump with their garden waste, adding to traffic congestion and pollution.
People will fly-tip their garden waste, leading to eyesores and the cost of clearing these up.
People will set fire to their garden waste and we will be back with the perpetual summer bonfire, choking the long hot summer days and nights with acrid fumes and causing severe breathing problems for asthmatics.
So well done, Sutton Council. Please, please, think again.
And as a Liberal Democrat council, how can you think of putting in place such a divisive and socially unequal policy?
Surely we all pay, through our council tax, for all the council services? Not just pick and choose if we can afford it. I wonder if it is even legal.

I wholeheartedly agree with Sue Lewis's comments above, and urget he Council to rethink. If I had the choice (and Sutton Council have not given me a choice..) I would ask that the old garden waste collection scheme is kept, and the new Council scheme to collect glass is scrapped.
PLEASE RE-INSTATE THE GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION SCHEME.
