School selection system is failing

I am writing in response to the report about the number of Sutton children without a secondary school place for September 2008.

I put three Sutton schools down for my daughter, two which were out of the borough. She did not get an offer from any of them.

I know I am not the only one as five other girls in her year at school were also without a place.

I am told by the admissions team that this year they are finding it hard to place girls and that the only school that has spaces is Carshalton Boys.

She is now on the waiting list for five Sutton schools.

I was also told that I missed the Greenshaw catchment area by 20 metres, which we were gutted about and are going to appeal against the decision.

To add insult to injury, I was sent a letter with a list of Croydon schools that have places. They ranged from Addiscombe, Selsdon, Norwood to Shirley, to name but a few. The schools named were obviously the worst in Croydon.

There is absolutely no way I would send my 11-year-old daughter on the bus, on her own, all that way only to arrive at a problem school. I would rather home school her than it come to that.

I was also told that if I had listed Carshalton Girls I definitely would have got in, the reason I didn't is because I have a younger son and I wanted them to both be at the same school.

I have had to go back on that decision and put it on my list so she has more of a chance of getting a school within this borough.

I also am aware of children in Sutton getting two choices which is not suppose to happen because of the pan-London system in which information is passed between the boroughs to ensure that all students are offered only one place.

This system is obviously failing. Not only between the boroughs but within Sutton.

I hope all these children get a place in a Sutton school for September. Fingers crossed.

if your child doesn't get into a sutton school and you pay sutton taxes then you shouldn't have to pay your taxes. sutton council has a duty to place sutton children in sutton schools. there is no excuse. i know of a certain school that allows battersea students in even though sutton kids are trying to get in. people can't afford to travel to schools on family budgets. is education unimportant to sutton council? build new schools with the hundreds of thousands you get off us in tax! my daughter is only 5 but i will raise holy hell if she doesn't attend a school she can walk to after paying out the hole for council tax for years. and now sutton allows loads more high rises to be built so they can rake in the additional council tax but where will the extra school places come from if they already don't have enough school places in the area? also, lunar house is known to be shipping unwanted immigrants into sutton, taking up school places for english born children and diverting school funds in teaching english as a SECOND language, again sutton council trying to be politically correct to the detriment of our local children.

Hi
I am having the same problem. My daughter has not got a school place for September. I have been a list of schools in the London Borogh of Croydon. I contacted my local MP and spoke to someone called Roger who said, just because you pay Sutton Council Tax does not mean you will get a Sutton School and I told him how concerned i was about her traveling alone to a Croydon school and he said it is part of growing up. I am very concerned she has no school place is there any way you can help me and all the other parents and children in the same sittuation. Please give me a call on 02084041302 Thanks Mrs Moore

I wonder if a MP would be so quick to place their 11 year old girl alone on a bus to Croydon. Part of growing up!!!???, no that's part of the problem of turning very young children into victims of crime. A parent should not have to worry about their childs safety when going to school, and to that Roger MP guy, excuse us, but yes, if we pay Sutton taxes YES we do deserve our children to go to a Sutton school! That's why we live in the borough we pay taxes in, to use our schools, libraries, roads, in our borough that we pay for! Someone needs to get this Roger MP guy and call him up on his apparent lack of giving a **** about children and kick him out of his office for insulting taxpayers of which he lives high on the hog in a safe little palace on our money. How dare anyone from the council or a MP rep dare say we should put our children in danger! Obviously a guy who doesn't have children and never had to face these problems because if he ever had kids they would have gone to private schools on our tax money in a luxury car!

I also have spoken to this Roger guy and it was clear that he didnt care what school my daughter attends. How did the Lib Dems even stay in when they treat our children like this...We were 18 metres away from Greenshaw and also put down every Sutton school available to her. Its a total joke that they expect her to travel to Croydon, and she blatently is NOT going there...because of the risk that she wont return home one day. The council need to stop taking immigrants into the schools and look after the children already here..
