Evidence loaded in BAA’s favour
Low arrival: An aircraft comes in to land at Heathrow
Low arrival: An aircraft comes in to land at Heathrow

It is distressing in the extreme to learn that, as some of us had already suspected, BAA has colluded with the Government to fix the evidence in favour of a third runway.

There now seems little doubt that BAA executives prevented the use of data which demonstrated that expansion of the airport would cause illegal levels of pollution and extra noise.

Rather, they gave the Government amended data which showed that the extra 230,000 flights per annum would have a minimal impact.

Other key points that have been discovered under the Freedom of Information Act, are:

  • BAA showed DfT officials how to "strip out" data that showed key targets would be breached.

  • Alternative data were repeatedly selected to ensure that final results in the consultation showed only a small impact of noise and air pollution.

  • The DfT gave BAA easy access to confidential papers and permitted the company to help rewrite the consultation document.

  • The final report considerably reduced the likely carbon emissions caused by the new runway by not including incoming internal flights.

  • The cosy relationship between the airports operator and the Government needs to end. Pronto.

Those of us who would be affected by the airport's expansion have a right to feel that the Government and its advisers are viewing the matter in a truly dispassionate way.

    ANDREW McLUSKEY, Stanwell
