Congratulations are surely in order for Surrey's distinguished chief constable Bob Quick.
Last year, he got a first' for his force from the chief inspector of constabulary.
He has now been appointed to a senior post in the Metropolitan Police, namely assistant commander - special operations.

The Met's gain will, of course, be our loss.
However, we still have (we hope) the rest of the excellent Surrey force.
As someone who lives in one of the more lively areas of the county, I have been impressed by the efficiency as well as the humanity of our local bobbies.
So to them, as well as to Mr Quick, we say thank you.
While on the subject of the police we also need to say a word of thanks to the police authority. They have, despite government meanness, recently constructed a viable budget for the next financial year.
It is to be hoped local MPs will continue to press ministers on the funding gap between what our force needs and what they contribute.

I do not share the views expressed above.
Recent content in this newspaper has revealed:-
1.Our valuable Surrey Police Officers employed on unnecessary duties at a children's nursery and at primary schools.
2.Unnecessary wasteful expenditure on the exteriors of police stations.
3.Unnecessary wasteful expenditure in producing, publishing and distributing the Policing Surrey Magazine.
4.Police Officers time wasted in pointless "local' meetings.
Recent press coverage of the views of the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, on the deployment of police resources, make it very surprising that he could ever have commended the Surrey Police Force.

If the reports in the National Press concerning Surrey Police Investigation of the Milly Dowler case are correct my mundane criticisms of the deployment of Surrey Police resources become completely insignificant judged against the very serious criticisms now being made over that investigation.
Who was in command of the Surrey Constabulary at the time of that investigation ?.

Surrey council tax payers will now have received their demand notices for the year from April 2008.
In increase in the Surrey Police Authority levy is a handsome 9.7%.
Can there be any council tax payer left who now believes that the the man at the top of the force, during the period leading up to this excessive increase, deserves to be commended ?.
Can there still be any council tax payer left who believes that police resources should be used for visits to children's nurseries ?.
Checking my figures before posting what do I find ?.
The 9.7% figure only appears on my Spelthorne Council Demand Notice.
No where does it appear on the four A4 size pages of the 'Policing Surrey' leaflet which presumably every Surrey County Council Council Tax payer will have received.
So much for honest openess from the Surrey Police Authority !.
