Friend of the animals will get my election vote

The London Mayor can make important changes to begin making the capital cruelty-free.

However, I'm still waiting for the main mayoral candidates to persuade me that they care about the thousands of animals used in experiments in London.

A recent survey showed that 66 per cent of people in the UK would like to live in a world where no one wants or thinks we need to experiment upon animals (NfpSynergy, March 2007).

Clearly, voters are concerned about testing on animals.

I hope that the successful candidate would submit to introducing a cruelty-free purchasing policy for City Hall.

It is time that ethical purchasing using taxpayers' money in the Greater London Assembly includes a clear policy to only purchase items that are proven to be cruelty-free.

For instance, the people of London should be able to expect that cleaning products used in the office of the Mayor, elected members and council staff should not have been tested on animals.

I want to see candidates make their views on animal testing clear to the public and to support a cruelty-free policy for City Hall.

i am worried the council will kill the croydon foxes following complaints of fox calls at night(its the mating season-it will end soon)70% of a foxes diet is RATS.What will happen to croydon if the foxes go?We will be infested with rats.Foxes live and raise their young where a rich supply of food is guaranteed.

Sarah, please do not worry. The Council do not kill foxes. Rats are vermin. Foxes are wildlife. Do a Google Search and find The Fox Project. They are protected. The Humane Wildlife Deterrence Society advise people on how to get rid of foxes humanely. Anyone killing or hurting a fox is dealt with by the Wildlife Police Officer and it is a £20,000 fine plus 6 months' imprisonment. I have had a vixen and her 3 cubs living in my back garden since early April.
