Why 13 is unlucky for some

11:42am Monday 19th December 2011

We are a nation of superstitious property buyers who avoid purchasing homes with the door number 13 – and when we do buy them, we pay less on average.

Sellers living at number 13 can expect to receive £6,511 or 4.1 per cent less when selling their property than those who live at a different number, according to FindaProperty.com’s analysis of ten year’s worth of data. There have been 34 per cent fewer properties sold with the no. 13, than those numbered one to 12 and 14 to 30.

Over the past 10 years, 144,789 number 13 roperties were sold compared to 239,716 no. 12s and 222,127 number 14s according to the Land Registry data analysed by FindaProperty.com.

It appears that Britons’ superstitions do not stop at the front door either, as 32 per cent fewer homes are sold on the 13th day of each month, making it the day when the least homes are sold.

Samantha Baden, property analyst at Finda Property.com, said: “Giving a property a name instead of a number can impact positively on the way potential buyers perceive it.”
