£350k man-made beaches plan for Sutton in Surrey

A man-made beach is planned for Sutton in a £325,000 facelift.

Beddington Park is applying for a grant to carry out a facelift this year, which could see the construction of the man-made beaches and recreational facilities, according to new proposals.

If the “public realm application”, submitted by the Friends of Beddington and Grange Park, is accepted the waterways would also be dredged and vital environmental regeneration work completed.

The proposed cost of £325,000 would see £50,000 spent on narrowing the River Wandle and improving water flow and £25,000 on creating the artifical beaches at locations along the river Another £200,000 would be used to dredge the boating lake and watercourse, and provide facilities to teach water crafts and safety.

An adventure playground has also been planned for the Canon Bridge area of the park with zipwires and ladders built to help “teenagers let off steam” at a cost of £50,000.

The Friends of Beddington and Grange Park’s application states: “We have been promoting the need for works to the Wandle and its immediate environs with the objectives of adding environmental, ecological, recreational, biodiversity and educational advantages.

“Our ideas have been the subject of meetings with representatives of the Environment Agency and Sutton Parks management and we have gained a fair degree of support for them from both sources.”

Councillor Ruth Dombey, deputy leader at Sutton Council, said: “Public realm funding for local committees is used to develop local areas to enable them to thrive and help meet the needs of residents and businesses as well as making improvements to see they continue to be attractive places to work, shop and live.

“The Beddington and Wallington local committee invited the public to put forward their ideas about how the funding for 2010-11 should be spent and will now consider the suggestions received. Further ideas from residents and local groups are still welcome.”

I hope that not a single penny of our Council Tax is being used on this "vanity" project. If it is, it proves yet again that Sutton Council is ripping us off year after year.If the truth be known they could cut Council Tax by 50% and still pay for the essential services.

Can we have a story about how an application for £25K for beaches gets over-inflated by 14 times into "£350K beaches plan"?

What a bunch of miserable moaners. I think this sounds lovely that perhaps one of our open spaces may have some much needed cash spent on it after many years of neglect.
I notice that none of you have put forward an alternative plan and as the saying goes any plan is better than no plan.

I think this is a brilliant idea. I remember using the boating lake as a child and when my children were young, I was disapointed when I brought them to the park and found there were no boats.

I'm not sure about the beaches, but the rest of the scheme look like a good idea.

Here's a plan, a new secondary school. Rather than have chavs bunk off school and hang out in a park, build more things that will actual improve the community. The beach idea is stupid, this is clamy England, not Florida. Cats and dogs will use it for a place to poo and it will get trashed. The boats would look nice, but it shouldn't cost this much!

Great idea in theory if can be enjoyed safely by families and children. The whole of Beddington Park at the moment is full of dogs mess, that some irresponsible dog owners do not pick up but leave for small children to step into or mums to push buggies through. As the park wardens do not seem to do anything about this and as the English weather so awful will this "beach" become a private playground for the dogs ?

This beach will become a disgusting mess after very short time, a stupid idea. No problem with boats going back on the lake. Not sure what 'narrowing the River Wandle' means, nothing stupid I hope.
