Hundreds of complaints over Morden depot Rapid Ready Mix's noise and dirt

Furious residents have criticised a construction company for blighting their neighbourhood with noise and dirt.

Hundreds of people have complained of excessive noise at Morden concrete supplier Rapid Ready Mix, allegedly caused by machinery, workmen and lorries at its Garth Road depot.

More than 200 people have signed a petition calling for action, and about 50 gathered for a meeting about the problem earlier this month.

But a spokesman for the company said the complaints were the result of “total ignorance”.

Lynmouth Avenue resident Barry Cahill said: “Surely this type of industry would be better served on a heavy use industrial estate where families are not affected?”

Last Friday (September 16) a public consultation ended on the business’s bid for an air emissions licence – which it will need to continue its work, although it has been operating without it for more than a year.

Merton Council is also investigating complaints about dust and noise.

Mr Cahill said the business was in operation seven-days-a-week, with trucks arriving as early as 7am and leaving as late as 10pm – many spilling rubble on to nearby roads.

He said noise had left many residents unable to enjoy their gardens over the summer.

His views were backed by Councillor Maurice Groves, who said: “There’s a lot of dust and noise. It’s not the sort of industry that ought to be located right in the heart of a residential area.”

Coun Groves said Rapid Ready Mix had been approved to use the site on the basis it was a similar business to the metal plant that was there previously, but the councillor claimed the new operation had a much bigger impact on residents.

A council spokesman said the decision about whether to grant the emissions licence was expected in about 12 weeks.

Rapid Ready Mix spokesman Rob Harverson said the complaints showed “total ignorance”.

He denied the site produced excessive noise and said regular cleaning and cutting-edge technology meant it created a minimum amout of dust.

He said the company might be being blamed for disruption caused by about 20 other industrial sites and builders’ yards nearby.

He said: “I’d invite every resident to contact me directly and visit our premises.”

I visited the site last year, I asked the owner why they were burning their rubbish when the local dump was 2 minutes up the road and was verbally abused. Then the angry little guy said I could take it up there myself as he has better things to do. I asked them again to stop burning all their used palettes and one of them said to the other one "Go up the timber yard and buy some more wood to burn!" Six months later the Environment Agency managed to stop them burning, the local council were unable to.

I, along with several other residents have tried on many occasions to talk to the owners of RRM and have been met with a barrage of foul mouthed abuse and physical threats that has left many people in the neighbourhood too afraid to confront them. Rapid Ready Mix is also well aware of the ongoing complaints to the council. We have been filling in diary sheets for the council for a long time now and we have provided photographic and video evidence of the constant noise from them as well as the overfilled lorries that speed up and down Garth Road spilling sand everywhere. As a resident I take great offence in being labeled as showing total ignorance. We are blaming Rapid Ready Mix for the noise because it is them causing it. It serves us no purpose in blaming an innocent party as we wont the source of the nuisance gone, not someone else.

The only person in this process displaying "total ignorance" is Rob Harverson.

Rob is ignorant towards the surrounding neighbours repeated requests to cease the excessive out of hours noise.

Rob is ignorant of the negative health impacts his business is having on the surrounding environment.

Rob is ignorant towards the council requests for the business to stop burning waste.

Rob is ignorant of the tax payer by wasting both the environmental health and the councils time with his cat and mouse games.

But perhaps the most ironic – Rob is totally ignorant of his social responsibilities to the local community - even when it’s presented in black and white print via the Wimbledon Guardian Rob continues to think its everyone else, except himself, who’s “totally ignorant”.

Rob, ask yourself this; do you think this story would have even make the paper without you are having such a negative impact on your local community? Oh of course, silly me for asking the question, you’re probably too ignorant to read a paper.
