New exhibition brings river to life

6:40am Saturday 3rd July 2010

An exhibition charting the transformation of the River Wandle from a sewer to a treasured part of south London’s scenery has opened.

Merton’s new mayor, Councillor Oonagh Moulton, was on hand earlier this month to cut the ribbon in front of new displays charting the river’s modern history and extensive environmental improvements made over the past two decades.

Meg Thomas, curator at the Wandle Industrial Museum, said: “We were delighted to see so many people here celebrating the Wandle which, over the years, has been transformed from a sewer to a source of great enjoyment.”

The museum, next to the Vestry Hall, London Road, is open every Wednesday from 1pm to 4pm, and the first Sunday of each month from 2pm to 5pm.
