Volunteers have begun the first stage of an allotment’s transformation into a sustainable garden, after receiving a grant from the Mayor of London.
Members of the Kingston Orchard Project began clearing the Knollmead allotments in Tolworth after Boris Johnson gave the organisation £1,000 under the Team London funding scheme.
The cash injection will encourage volunteers to take part on the allotment, making new beds to grow vegetables and produce food for the community.
The micro grant is one of three awarded to Kingston initiatives under the mayor’s scheme, which works to cut crime, increase youth opportunities and improve quality of life.
The grants aim to help smaller community groups, which aren’t usually eligible for this kind of funding, increase their volunteering capacity and reach their full potential.
Mr Johnson said: “These micros grants are ensuring that smaller community projects right across the capital are receiving the support they deserve.”
The other two Kingston projects are Parkfields Community Garden and BRAG Residents Association.
