Five young eco stars who helped their school turn green for a year have been honoured by the council.
The 11 year olds from Grand Avenue primary school, Surbiton, were surprised when climate change officer Matt Howell presented them with prizes for being the borough’s best eco stars during an assembly on Wednesday, June 29.
The team impressed judges by organising walk to school weeks once a term, persuading people to turn off lights for an hour on earth day, and running assemblies and a poster competition on road safety.
Deputy head Anna McKenna said: “They were absolutely thrilled – they really could not believe it. As their teacher, they have worked really hard to sustain the impact of their work over the years and I’m really proud of them.”
The school won a bird box with a camera inside, so pupils can watch a link on the computer.
The award came during the school’s eco-friendly week, which saw Surrey Wildlife Trust and EDF Energy visit the school
