Kingston Council pledges to cut carbon by 10 per cent

Kingston Council has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by 10 per cent next year after signing up to a nation-wide campaign to fight global warming.

The 10:10 campaign, launched in September, asks individuals, businesses and organisations to commit to cutting carbon emissions by 10 per cent by 2010. Those already signed up include Gordon Brown, Microsoft and the Cheshire police force.

Councillor Bob Steed, who has responsibility for climate change, told Tuesday’s meeting of the council’s executive committee the authority had taken the pledge after receiving cross-party support.

He said: “I think we have made a good step by committing to 10:10, which is a quick way of moving towards our longer term targets.”

The campaign’s tips for achieving the reduction include driving less, turning down thermostats, having one meat free day a week and taking showers instead of baths.
