Croydon Council and its refuse-collection partner Veolia say they are ready to take on the for the extra waste which grows over the festive season.

Plans have been put in place which will see minimal disruption to household collections of waste and recycling.

There will be five days over the Christmas period on which refuse collections will vary from the usual schedule.

All collections between 26 December and 30 December, will be one day later than usual.

This means collections scheduled for December 26 will take place on December 27, and so on until the December 30 collections are made on December 31.

The rearranged dates apply to both refuse and recycling collections.

Homeowners are being reminded their paper gift wrap and Christmas cards can be left out in recycling boxes and residents are also being urged to make full use of the new borough-wide food waste collection service.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: "Christmas is traditionally a time when a lot of food waste is generated.

"We'd ask that if you're unable to store leftovers, until such time as they can be used in recipes over the following days, you put the waste into your food caddy, rather than in the general landfill bin.

"Christmas is a great time to make the most of the council's recycling facilities, so lets all do our best to make sure as much is recycled as possible."

All households will receive a leaflet containing details of the rearranged collection dates and Christmas-tree recycling points.

Information on waste and recycling can be found on the council's website at www.croydon.gov.uk or by calling 0208 726 6200.
