Two schools have been awarded prizes for their efforts to become more energy efficient.

The Pod, EDF Energy’s online programme for greener schools, awarded the prizes as part of Green Britain Day, an event that saw more than 1,350 schools take part.

Broadmead Primary School in Croydon spent their Green Britain Day learning about biodiversity, with students building a ‘hotel’ for bugs out of natural materials found in their school garden.

They also created posters with unusual bug facts and made a ‘biodiversity’ display.

Students at David Livingstone Primary School in Thornton Heath decided to spend their day planting vegetables and herbs. Pupils uploaded a photo of their garden to www.jointhepod.org to share with other schools.

For their efforts, the schools were entered into a prize draw, and both schools scooped top prizes, including 32 tickets to the EDF Energy London Eye and a wine turbine kit worth more than £100.

Robyn Broughton, EDF Energy’s schools programme manager, said: “It’s wonderful to see schools being so enthusiastic. Hopefully these prizes will inspire the students to develop their ideas even further.”
