Residents all pitched in to help clear the rubbish in Love Lane Green.
They have been urging the council to make a compulsory purchase order (CPO) on the land, which is derelict as they want an open space for their children to play in.
There have been numerous planning applications to build houses on the land which have been turned down.
But residents said there was nowhere for children to play and the green would be ideal.
Councillors also pitched in to help with the clean-up.
Tony Newman, leader of the Labour group, said: “I was delighted to see so many members of the community coming together to show civic pride in our local green spaces is very much alive.
“All we need to see now is the Love Lane Green site returned to people to use and the property speculators told once and for all they will never be allowed to build on the site.”
Councillor Gavin Barwell, the Conservative parliamentary candidate, also helped clear the litter.
He wrote on his blog: “The current owner has allowed the green to become overgrown and there is a problem with flytipping.
"As a result, it is a real eyesore at the moment.
“The council is working with the residents’ association to try to bring it back into public use to provide some much needed facilities, particularly for young people who currently have no option but to play in the street, which isn’t safe for them and causes a nuisance to their neighbours.”
