Car club could cut ownership

Kingston could be host to a City Car Club if enough people register their interest. The scheme is designed to cut car ownership and provides a pool car that members can pay to use for short periods of time. It is successfully running in other London boroughs including Sutton and Merton, but Kingston does not yet have a scheme.

Mark Hillyer from City Car Club said the scheme does not necessarily need action from the council, and if about 20 people say they would use the scheme, City Car Club will look into providing a car. "Obviously we would prefer the support of the council as we need to find an on-street parking spot but the council does not need to pay for the car," he said. Kingston University's new Centre for Sustainable Communities Achieved Through Integrated Professional Education (C-SCAIPE) is hosting a talk called Help Change the World During Working Hours, on Wednesday, November. Tim Ashton (Antidote) and Eugenie Harvey (We Are What We Do) will discuss personal action, individual empowerment and sustainable communities with Catherine McDermott, director of Kingston's MA course, Curating Contemporary Design. Kingston Council's community environment officer Carlos Queremel is running a workshop with Learn English at Home (LEAH) and Refugee Action on Environment Day on Wednesday, November 29.

Carlos will work with students and refugees to advise them on how to live more sustainably.

LEAH has worked with Carlos to develop resources which are pitched at the right level for the refugees whose first language is not English.
