Kingston Council is teaming up with supermarkets in the borough to educate consumers on how they can buy less wasteful products and even save money.

The ShopSMART campaign (Save Money and Reduce Trash) kicked off with a sustainable shopping display outside Sainsbury's in Richmond Road on Friday, July 28.

Shoppers signed a pledge promising to change at least one wasteful shopping activity, in return for a cotton reusable bag and a guide to recycling.

Act now, save later, is the message given to London businesses by the Government's Energy Review, released in July.

The Environment Agency estimates that as much as 7.5million tonnes of industrial and commercial waste is produced around London every year, with 40 per cent of this ending up in landfill.

Envirowise, the Government agency that helps businesses use their resources efficiently, says that early action to reduce waste could lead to savings later on.
