Council sets out green strategy
Richmond Council is setting an example to residents with its latest green agreement.
A new unit dedicated to sustainability has written action plans for departments and contractors, to help the borough achieve its climate change strategy agreed earlier this year and to nudge it closer to being the most sustainable London borough.
A spokesman for the unit, which has laid out specific targets, from scrapping plastic cups to improving recycling services, said: "This strategy gives us a focus to manage the environmental impact of our activities, starting by cutting energy consumption in council buildings.

"We are also supporting schools, residents and community groups in taking action on climate change, and are promoting affordable warmth to all residents."
Leader of the council, Councillor Serge Lourie, said: "This is an ambitious programme of measures combined with a basic message that, if everyone takes action to reduce their CO2 emissions, climate change can be combated."
He added that Richmond is the first to link the cost of parking permits to the vehicle's CO2 emissions, which he said has had a "domino effect" across the country and that Richmond will be the first borough to run its vehicle fleet solely on biodiesel, saving hundreds of tonnes of CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere.
