Turbine arrives at Merton Abbey Mills

| Blown away: Owner of Merton Abbey Mills Terry Buckland and Peter Walder from Colour House Theatre |
Merton Abbey Mills has taken delivery of its new wind turbine following delays caused by the recent windy weather.
Once erected the turbine will power the entire Colour House Theatre making it the country's first stage run entirely on renewable energy.
"This is going to have a tremendous impact and if nothing else will save us an enormous amount of money," said Peter Walder from the theatre.

Engineers had been unable to dismantle the vertical-axis turbine as it underwent final tests at a Pembrokeshire factory two weeks ago.

The very reason these buildings are where they are is because of the fastest flowing river in the South of England. So why not a water turbine (like the old one!) Probably not avant-garde enough.Instead we have a ridiculous looking thing plonked proudly on the roundabout for all to see. The attraction of Abbey Mills is its old time charm. Its not enough that the people were stitched up by the council and we ended up with fast food chain outlets and high rise developments to dwarf the mills but now this! I am not anti renewable energy but is another example of non joined up thinking.
