Kingston guide to all things Fairtrade
Fair call: Organisers Basil Thompson, Tim Woolven and Francis Smith

The number of outlets selling Fairtrade products in Kingston has doubled in the past three years, sparking the launch of a new Fairtrade guide for the borough.

The guide, featuring the 86 shops, cafés and supermarkets in Kingston which stock products supporting third world farmers, was launched as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

It is the fourth version of the guide released since it was first launched in 2005, when Kingston become a Fairtrade borough.

The latest guide was designed by Kingston Youth Council and is available from a number of the outlets featured inside, as well as libraries, the Guildhall and the Kingston Market House.

"We are really pleased with how many new places have signed up to join the guide," said Douglas James, joint co-ordinator of Kingston Fairtrade steering group.

"We have seen exponential growth in the number of outlets, which is the most encouraging thing. The biggest growth recently has been in the number of cafés signing up."

Throughout Fairtrade Fortnight, which ran from February 25 to March 9, Fairtrade campaigners also distributed the leaflets in supermarkets.

Mr James said: "People have really been taking an interest. Some of the outlets have rung up for more guides within a day of receiving them."

Kingston also appears in a London-wide guide, which features the 15 Fairtrade boroughs across the capital. The guide is available from the same outlets.
