Activists visit Parliament

| Springboard for issues: Rex Osbourne, Sadiq Khan MP, Chris Watt and Susie Morrow |
Activists from across the borough have visited the Palace of Westminster for the first meeting of a forum dedicated to discussing environmental issues.
Sadiq Khan hosted Tooting's inaugural Environmental Policy Forum last week.
More than 100 environmental activists came to Parliament for the special event, where they talked to Minister for the Environment Joan Ruddock and made suggestions on how to improve the local environment in Tooting.
Local, national and international aspects of environmental policy and action were among the issues discussed and Mrs Ruddock also spent more than an hour discussing the Climate Change Bill, recycling, aviation and renewable energy.
Mr Khan said: "This forum will hopefully be a springboard for joined-up local action on the environment.
"It was extremely encouraging that so many people came to the event and made valuable contributions to the debate on the sustainability of our environment.
"We have so many fantastic local initiatives being led by local environmental activists and I am extremely pleased that I had the opportunity to talk to them.
"I will be working with local residents who attended the event to make improvements to our shared environment and I will be lobbying the council, the Mayor and the Government to do more to make our community a cleaner, more environmentally sustainable place."
Following a question and answer session with the minister, three topics of local interest were discussed and everyone was given the opportunity to suggest what more can be done locally to raise the profile of environmental issues and also what progress the community could make.
Susie Morrow from Wandsworth Cycling Campaign led a debate about sustainable transport, Chris Watt, a local energy expert, a debate on sustainable energy and Councillor Rex Osborn, Labour's speaker on the council's environment committee, discussed what the council could do to improve the local environment.
Susie Morrow said: "It was a great idea to hold this event, which was very productive. I am hopeful that it will bring a lot of benefits to Tooting."
