Last Saturday, campaigners from Lambeth south-west London World Development Movement (WDM) posed with a 7m by 7m inflatable aeroplane to remind the prime minister that emissions from aviation and shipping should be included in the framework of the Climate Change Bill.
The huge inflatable aeroplane and a fake Gordon Brown were used as part of a climate change demonstration in Grafton Square, Clapham Old Town.
Andrew Hanson, of Lambeth Friends of the Earth (FoE), said: "It is vital that carbon dioxide emissions from aviation and shipping are included in the Climate Change Bill. To leave them out is rather like going on a diet but not counting
calories from chocolate."
Recent compelling evidence of a warming climate is the break up of the Wilkins ice shelf in Antarctica, which has lost 160 square miles (257 square kilometers) since February.
David Johnstone of WDM said: "Aviation is the UK's fastest growing source of emissions and is estimated to already account for about 13 per cent of the UK's contribution to climate change.
"We cannot seriously tackle climate change if we do not halt the growth in emissions from aviation
and that will not happen if flying is exempt from the Bill targets."
Local MPs Martin Linton, Keith Hill, Kate Hoey and Sadiq Khan were all invited to lend their support
to the lobby.
