Calling all old phone users

Wandsworth residents can protect the environment and also support two charitable causes if they recycle their old mobile phones.

The council has set up a new mobile phone recycling scheme in partnership with a private recycling company that will provide much needed financial support to two of the Mayor of Wandsworth's charities; the Alzheimers Society and the Salvation Army.

The recycling company - Re:Cycle Your Mobile - will pay the charities up to £10 for each handset received.

To take part pick up a freepost envelope from your local library, leisure centre or the town hall and and then simply pop your phone in the post.

Councillor Malcolm Grimston said: "The average Briton replaces their mobile phone every 18 months, so in the UK alone there are an estimated 80million mobiles lying around. Most of these old handsets are either kept as an unnecessary spare set or end being thrown away in the rubbish.

"Disposing of them in this way can cause quite serious environmental problems as they do contain some quite toxic parts. It makes real sense to recycle these unwanted handsets; from an environmental point of view it's a no-brainer."
