If a crowded beach doesn't capture your imagination, then why not join a research expedition to one of the world's most famous river areas - the Amazon or Zambezi?
Earthwatch, the international environmental charity, is inviting volunteers to join Amazon Riverboat Exploration, set in the breathtaking Peruvian Amazon, and Crocodiles of the Zambezi, based in the Zambezi River Valley in Zambia.
Staying aboard a three-deck vintage boat, on Amazon Riverboat Exploration volunteers help leading scientists to conserve Amazon dolphins, giant river otters, monkeys, turtles, fish, macaws and other birds. In this remote and isolated region, they collect information about wildlife in one of two river areas - Lago Preto or the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, rotating between aquatic surveys from motorised canoes, and land surveys. Recreational time offers a chance to relax on deck in one of the Earth's most beautiful wild places.

On Crocodiles of the Zambezi volunteers work and camp in the Zambezi River Valley, home to an astounding abundance of African wildlife. Volunteers help researchers investigate the status of the Nile crocodile population, setting and checking crocodile traps, measuring and tagging crocodiles, and radio-tracking previously tagged animals. This important research will supply the information needed to establish a conservation strategy that protects both crocodiles and humans.
For those preferring a European expedition, Mountain Waters of the Czech Republic offers an alternative option. Staying in a cosy farmhouse in the enchanting Jizera Mountains, volunteers contribute to long-term monitoring, and help to restore the vital links of ecosystems damaged by acid rain. Tasks include taking water samples from mountain streams and reservoirs, examining reintroduced fish, and hiking through beech and spruce forests to sample trees, soil and vegetation. Recreational time offers a chance to hike or bike in the mountains or visit nearby castles and museums.
