Businesses clean up for prizes

Businesses in Kingston are leading the way in a national award scheme for tidiness.

The Tidy Business Awards recognise companies which manage their waste properly and improve the local environment.

Kingston was the first town to introduce the scheme and now businesses are going for gold.

They must meet strict criteria on recycling and waste minimisation, as well as legal compliance.

Those businesses entering are inspected by a Kingstonfirst assessment team, and could be awarded bronze, silver or gold status as a result.

“It will be great to reward these businesses for their efforts, and give advice to those businesses who need a little help to find solutions to their waste management problems.”
Lucinda Raggett, Kingstonfirst

Bronze awards are given for basic storage and handling of waste, with silver going to organisations which reduce, reuse and recycle waste material.

To achieve a gold award, businesses must demonstrate they not only care for their own premises, but actively support community projects, or other environmental initiatives, to keep Kingston clean.

Lucinda Raggett, operations manager for Kingstonfirst, said: "We already have many businesses in the Business Improvement District (Bid) which are clean, green and responsible in their waste management practices.

"It will be great to reward these businesses for their efforts, and give advice to those businesses who need a little help to find solutions to their waste management problems."

All businesses within the Kingstonfirst Bid can enter and six businesses have already signed up, including Bentalls, Horrocks and Boyd Opticians and Rearden Cord Recruitment Agency.

Applications should be submitted to Kingstonfirst by the end of May, with the award ceremony taking place in the summer.
