Charity’s 999 call for safety

A project dedicated to turning used mobile phones into personal safety alarms, which took hold in Hounslow years ago, has recently been expanded across the UK.

Fonesforsafety recycles old phones into lifelines by reconfiguring them into 999 only phone alarms for victims of domestic violence.

Hounslow was just one of two London boroughs hosting the project when it launched in 2003.

Since then, the charity has recycled more than 70,000 unwanted mobiles into alarms to help victims free of charge.

The project, run by the sustainability group Crisp, was founded by Richard Anderson.

He said: "The project works because it combines environmental protection with social empowerment."
