A group of teenagers who are in care or leaving care will now save money and the planet after
being given bicycles to get around.
The 30 young men and women, who are all undertaking education, training or employment,
were presented with their new wheels at the Spot youth dropin centre in Lampton Road.
Hounslow's deputy lead member for education and children, Lin Davies, said it was important
that young people leaving care develop useful habits.
She said: "Having a bike helps them get to and from work, training or their place of education,
at the same time as keeping them healthy, cutting
congestion and leaving them with more money in their pocket."
One proud new bike owner said his bike would save him £50 a month on a bus pass.
He said: "That's £600 a year I'll have to spend on things for myself."
Funding for the green project came from the People's Empowerment and Education Programme. Staff at Moores Bros in Isleworth provided the cyclists with safety advice.
The teenagers chose from eight different bikes and were also given locks, helmets, lights and free services after six weeks and six months.
