How to make the best of your entry

You can nominate someone else for an award, or enter yourself. If you are nominating someone, please include as much information as you can - we will contact them about entering the awards. If you want to enter yourself, please read the key points below to ensure that your entry accurately reflects what you have achieved.

1. Make sure you know which of the eight categories you are entering for and if entering online that you select the right category in the Enter section of this website.

2. You can fill out the entry form online, or download a printable version here. Alternatively you can get an entry form from Hannah Weston on 020 8744 4223, email hweston@london.newsquest.co.uk

3. When filling out the form please give us a clear overview of what you have been doing. Don’t forget to mention the full range of your environmental activities.

4. Tell us about anything innovative you have done and any challenges you have overcome (for example: There was no composting at our flats so I contacted the landlord and he agreed to allow me to erect a composter in the communal garden.)

5. Please let us know about the impact your work is having, and include any figures you have (such as: By increasing the amount I recycle I have cut down the number of rubbish bags each week from two to one).

6. Has your work inspired anyone else to get involved, or follow your lead? If so, don’t forget to include this. (For example: After we installed the rainwater harvester and solar panels on our house, we were contacted by a number of neighbours who wanted to find out how they worked, with a view to installing them themselves.)

7. Judges are particularly interested in anything green you have done since September 2007. So don’t forget to include this.

8. Supporting evidence. Do include as much supporting evidence as you can with your entry form. (For example: any photographs of your work, drawings, project plans, testimonials from other people, or any applications for grants or awards you have made that relate to the entry). This will allow judges to get the fullest possible picture of your work.

Although supporting evidence is very useful, if you don't have any don't let it stop you entering. But please then ensure that you put in as much detail as you can on the entry form itself.

If you are submitting your entry form online, you can upload your supporting evidence using the form - or send it by post (along with a copy of your entry form) to the borough contact listed on the bottom of the entry form and on the awards section of the website. If you want your supporting evidence sent back to you please ensure you mark this clearly on your entry form.

9. Judges will be looking for different things in each category so do read the detailed suggestions on the categories page.

10. Adults will generally be expected to fill out their own entry form, but entries for young people will be accepted from schools, parents, and organisations.

11. Make sure you get your entry form in as early as you can. The competition closes on September 22, but the earlier you get your entry in the better, as it will allow us to come back to you in good time if we need any more information. Entrants will be notified after September 22 about borough award events which are likely to take place in October before the regional final in November.

12. All paper entries and supporting documents should be sent to the contact for your borough listed on the bottom of each entry form. If you have any questions about the entry process call Hannah on 020 8744 4223, or email hweston@london.newsquest.co.uk
