Choose recyclable glass containers
When shopping, choose recyclable glass containers where possible.

Reuse your carrier bags
Don't accept bags when you are at the shops - keep reusable ones. About ten billion plastic carrier bags are handed out in the UK each year. That's 167 for each of us. Keep a stash of reusable bags by the front door so that you remember to take a couple when you pop out for shopping.

Ladies - get a Mooncup
The Mooncup is an eco-friendly alternative to tampons and sanitary towels. For under £20, you get a reusable silicone rubber cup which will save money within six months and stop endless amounts of disposable sanitary protection from taking up space in landfill sites. The Mooncup is easily sterilised, easy to use and poses no risk of toxic shock syndrome.

Check so-called organic toiletries
Watch out for so-called organic or natural shampoos. Unlike food labelling, the toiletry industry has no regulations to prevent the misuse of these terms.

Avoid products containing palm oil
Friends of the Earth says this vegetable is the most signifcant cause of rainforest loss in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Get an eco-friendly fridge
Choose a fridge with a high energy-efficiency rating - and position it away from heat sources such as cookers, ovens, dishwashers or radiators.

Use a ball for your washing instead of chemicals
An environmentally friendly ball will clean clothes without the use of harsh chemicals.

Get a more efficient cooker
Choose your cooker wisely. Large, new ranges use a lot of power and are usually poorly insulated.

Get eco-friendly patio furniture
Always look out for the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) symbol on wooden garden furniture to ensure it is sustainably sourced.

Switch from disposable to reusable products
Switch from disposable to reusable products: food and beverage containers, cups, plates, writing pens, razors, nappies, shopping bags, etc. Not only would this be good for the environment, but it will also leave more room in your dustbin.
