Film producer Lord Puttnam made a return visit to Eltham College recently for a gala dinner celebrating the school’s centenary and its links with Chariots of Fire hero Eric Liddell.
The winner of the men’s 400 metres at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. who was depicted in the Oscar-winning 1981 film, attended Eltham College while his parents were missionaries in China.
Old Elthamians, staff and others who have all had a long relationship with the school, were invited back for the dinner. Lord Puttnam delighted guests with stories from his career and urged everyone to reflect on the values that Eric Liddell stood for.
Headmaster Paul Henderson said: “We were delighted to welcome Lord Puttnam back to Eltham College and to celebrate the occasion with so many friends from within our community.”
One hundred years ago the school for the sons of missionaries moved from The Old Barn in Blackheath to Fairy Hall in Mottingham and opened its doors as Eltham College.
