How to get ahead in the hair beauty industry

Alison Shelley has helped scores of young people gain a career in the hair and beauty industry since establishing Visage Hair and Beauty Colleges in Eltham and Blackfen.

She and her team of qualified tutors and assessors offer apprenticeship programmes for 16 to 24-year-olds wanting to obtain a NVQ apprenticeship.

She first opened a beauty salon in Eltham in 1986 and then a hairdressing salon four years later. Then in 1993, with backing from the government’s Learning and Skills Council, she opened a training college at her 24-room premises in Eltham.

She then opened a second hair and beauty college in Blackfen to meet demand for her courses. Her learners have the opportunity to earn while they learn, either working in her commercial salons or at other salons.

“Our busy commercial salons coupled with our close industry links provide opportunities for learners to develop current professional skills and form essential contacts within the industry,” adds Alison.
