School receives £220,000 for Croydon community football pitch

The next generation of artificial football pitches is set to come to a Croydon community thanks to a £220,000 grant.

Coloma Convent Girls’ School has been handed the cash to build a third-generation floodlit pitch on its grounds, which will be available for use by residents as part of the school’s outreach policy.

The grant from the Football Foundation represents 60 per cent of the total cost of the new pitch, which can also be used for rugby, lacrosse and rounders.

Headteacher Maureen Martin said: “Our vision is to provide quality, safe football opportunities for people of all ages.

“In particular, this facility will prove to be a centre of excellence for girls’ and women’s football both within our school and the wider community.”

Stuart Lamb, the Football Association’s regional facilities manager, said: “This project will provide excellent facilities for the surrounding community.

“The school deserves tremendous credit for being successful in obtaining this Football Foundation award.”
